Right-of-Way Herbicide Applicator

This position plays a vital role in maintaining clear and safe public areas by applying herbicides to designated trees and brush along rights-of-way. The primary objective is to execute safe and effective vegetation management while adhering to state agricultural regulations.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Starting pay of $21.00 per hour, increasing to $22.00 per hour upon passing the MDARD test.
  • Per diem allowance of $40 per day when traveling on the road.

Responsibilities

  • Apply herbicides to designated tree and brush vegetation along specific rights-of-way (ROW).
  • Mix and load herbicides safely, which involves climbing in and out of the rear of utility trucks.
  • Navigate and walk through uneven terrain, dense brush, and wetland areas to reach application sites.
  • Carry a 5-gallon backpack weighing up to 50 pounds throughout the ROW for shifts lasting up to 10 hours.
  • Move and handle large chemical barrels weighing 150 pounds or more into and out of transport vehicles.
  • Travel extensively across the state of Michigan to service various client sites and right-of-way contracts.


Requirements

  • Hold a valid Driver's License and maintain a willingness to travel extensively throughout the state.
  • Possess a Michigan Department of Agriculture (MDARD) Commercial Applicator license with Category 6 (Right of way).
  • Pass the MDARD Core & ROW exams successfully after the initial 2-week training period to maintain employment.
  • Demonstrate the physical ability to carry a 50-pound backpack continuously for 10 hours, and maneuver barrels weighing over 150 pounds.
  • Exhibit comfort and physical stamina for walking through uneven terrains, thick brush, and wetland environments.
